Cites progress in Public Safety & Economic Development

County Executive Steve Stenger officially filed for re-election today for the Democratic primary on Tuesday, August 7th.

When the State of Missouri refused to act, Steve Stenger initiated a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program for St. Louis County which was the first jurisdiction in the state to adopt a comprehensive database for monitoring the sale of prescription drugs, including opioids that can cause addition and lead to heroin abuse when overprescribed.  “I know this is a public health crisis that can’t be ignored,” said Stenger.  “My own nephew Mitch died from a heroin overdose in 2014, so I understand firsthand the devastating effect the opiate crisis is having on our communities.”

Today, over 80% of the State of Missouri’s population now participate in the county program.

Stenger also spearheaded the passage of Proposition P, which increases diversity in police ranks, improves training, and adds more equipment like body cameras to increase accountability of officers on the streets.  Stenger understands that in order to have real public safety, communities and law enforcement must trust each other and work together.

Under Stenger’s leadership, St. Louis County has brought in over 5 billion in economic development and created and retained over 30,000 jobs.
